Kirby’s Story: How Maven Helped Detect Dog Anxiety

Kirby is a nine-year-old Maltipoo with a gentle soul and a history of heart disease. Like many dogs, he’s sensitive to changes in routine. But when his pet parent left for a short vacation, a quiet shift in Kirby’s behavior was actually an indicator of something more serious… He was struggling with dog anxiety.

Thankfully, Kirby was wearing a Maven Pet Dog Health Tracker.

Meet Kirby: A Loving Dog With a Complex Medical History

Kirby lives a mostly indoor life. He takes daily walks, has a low activity level, and is on medication for a heart condition. Since February, he’s been taking Lasix, a diuretic that helps manage his condition. His health had been stable. But in March 2025, something changed.

From the outside, Kirby seemed okay. But behind the scenes, Maven’s health sensor was picking up subtle signs of trouble.

The First Red Flag: Drinking Too Much Water

On March 23, Maven sent the first health alert. Kirby’s water intake had spiked. It wasn’t just a one-off. Over the next three days, the app continued flagging his drinking behavior as abnormal.

By March 25, a health checkup was triggered in the Maven app. The pet parent responded to the check up a few days later, confirming an increase in water intake and something else — Kirby had started peeing in places he usually wouldn’t.

In veterinary terms, polyuria and polydipsia — an increase in urine output and increase in water intake, respectively — can be red flags for underlying health or emotional issues. Increased drinking and urination are rarely random. In Kirby’s case, it pointed to something deeper.

Looking Deeper: Not Just Physical, But Emotional

Maven vets reviewed the data. Kirby’s activity levels and nighttime rest had changed too. He was more restless, sleeping less, waking more often, and was showing unusual activity levels at night.. These signs lined up with common symptoms of anxiety in dogs.

Although warmer weather or a more active day can sometimes explain a bump in thirst, they don’t explain a dog peeing everywhere — especially in an otherwise well-trained pet. Anxiety, however, can.

The Missing Piece: A Change in Environment

Activity and Sleep Interruptions – Nighttime

When Maven’s vet team followed up, Kirby’s pet parent shared a key detail. From March 23 to 29, the family was away. Kirby was staying with a friend.

“He’s a pretty anxious dog,” they said. “I think it took him a few days to adjust.”

Suddenly, it all made sense. The drinking, the accidents in the house, the restless nights — all signs of dog anxiety triggered by a new environment. The data didn’t just show the problem. It told a story.

Sleep time Nighttime

Sleep Data That Told the Truth:

  • Sleep interruptions spiked to 12 per night (his average is 3)
  • Nighttime activity rose from under 1 hour to over 7 hours on the first night away
  • Total sleep time dropped by more than half on the first night

This wasn’t random behavior. It was a real-time record of Kirby’s emotional state — dog anxiety captured in data.

Back Home, Back to Normal

Once Kirby returned home, everything shifted back.

  • Water intake normalized
  • Sleep patterns stabilized
  • Restlessness eased

Maven then generated a “health normalized” insight, confirming his patterns had returned to baseline.

Why This Matters:

Without Maven, these signs could have been missed. A spike in thirst might have been brushed off. Restless nights could’ve gone unnoticed. But with Maven’s continuous tracking, Kirby’s parents were empowered to see what Kirby couldn’t say.

This is why proactive pet care matters. And it’s what Maven was built to do.

What the Pet Parent Had to Say:

“I love Maven. When Kirby got sick, I asked the vet why it happened so fast, and he said the signs were probably there — I just didn’t notice. That made me nervous. I consider myself an observant, loving owner. But when he got home from the hospital, I couldn’t keep an eye on his status. Now I can. Kirby and I both appreciate you and the whole Maven team.”

The Takeaway: Don’t Wait for Symptoms to Appear

Not all health issues are visible. And dog anxiety doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s just a little more water, a bit less sleep, or a puddle in the wrong place.

Maven helps you see those changes, connect the dots, and take action before it’s too late.

If you’ve ever asked yourself,
“Why is my dog peeing everywhere?”
or
“Is my dog anxious when I leave?”
—you’re not alone.

With Maven, you don’t have to guess. You just have to pay attention. We’ll take care of the rest.
