Maven Success Stories: Freeing Jake of Dog Joint Pain

Thanks to our accurate activity/sleep data collection and other factors, such as information logged by the vet or collected via regular health checkups, Maven gets the inside scoop like no other… Making its analyses truly helpful. But just how much of a difference can Maven make – for example, when it comes to dog joint pain? Meet our friend Jake!

The patient: Jake, Golden Retriever Mix

Jake is a 13-year old geriatric Golden Retriever mix, neutered and overweight, with no known pre-existing chronic conditions. He joined Maven at 12 years of age, and lives with his pup sister Julie.

His right eye was enucleated after dealing with glaucoma and a bad corneal ulcer. He has had subcutaneous lumps of consistent size and shape for 3-4 years before joining Maven, along with some tartar accumulation.

Additionally, Jake had previously had some trouble getting up, which improved with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication after the eye surgery. The pet parent decided to join Maven so as to make sure her pets were at their best health.

After some pattern evaluation, it was clear Jake was generally more energetic in the mornings, with his activity usually coming from playing and running in the yard with his pet parent. Some days looked a little more calm, as the pet parent sometimes worked from home and Jake loves to sleep under the desk.

Key data points collected

Jake showed low activity patterns with high fluctuations. He had an average daily activity level of about 77%. He also showed very contrasting values between days – for example, he could achieve an activity peak of about 122% on one day, while declining to 56% the next day – a considerable difference.

Jake’s nighttime activity showed some interruptions in his rest, with multiple instances where Jake woke up every night.

In addition to the activity data collected, the pet parent also reported that Jake showed some reluctance to follow commands. This could be attributed either to unusual changes in the pet’s routine or potential soreness in their body.

Detection and treatment

After the Smart collar monitored Jake’s activity, sleep and behavior for a while, Maven’s AI analyzed the data and it was inferred that Jake was likely suffering from joint discomfort.

Following the detection, the necessary actions were taken. Jake started taking joint supplements and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to improve his symptoms and overall comfort.

After treatment

After initiating treatment, Jake’s average daily activity level increased to 81% and the values stabilized between days, showing less contrast. His sleep quality improved dramatically! On average, he slept through 98% of the night, showing lower nighttime activity and less awake time during the nighttime.

Jake also became more responsive to commands and began engaging in play times with his pet parent once again. He showed great improvement – not only regarding dog joint pain, but overall!

Maven’s data-driven approach facilitated tailored interventions that effectively addressed Jake’s joint discomfort… Leading not only to improved activity levels, but to a better overall quality of life.
