Watching your dog running through fallen leaves is one of the best things about the Fall season!  But with the end of summer also comes an abundance of acorns, providing food for wild animals through the winter months. But can dogs eat acorns?<\/strong> Or are acorns toxic to dogs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acorns are the nuts from oak trees, and the reason why they are poisonous to dogs is that they contain tannins, a substance that is toxic to dogs. This can lead to gastrointestinal issues and, in severe cases, liver and kidney failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other issue with acorns is that they are hard and can create a blockage. If they become lodged in the esophagus the dog can potentially choke. Acorns can also cause damage to the intestines due to their somewhat spiky exterior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
