This popular condiment may seem harmless and healthy\u2026 But is it a good idea for your canine friend? <strong>Can dogs eat mustard<\/strong>, or is mustard toxic to dogs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can dogs eat mustard?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/maven.pet\/all-about-pets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/can_dogs_eat_mustard_can.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2688\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs should not eat mustard in any form, as it is toxic to dogs. All types of mustard are made from mustard seeds, which contain a toxin called isothiocyanate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isothiocyanates cause stomach and airway inflammation in dogs, leading to some painful and extremely debilitating symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, all types of mustard are toxic to dogs. This includes yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, honey mustard, English mustard, wild mustard, mustard powder, and even homemade mustard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the toxins are contained exclusively within the seeds of the mustard plant, there is no cause for concern if your dog eats flowering wild mustard or mustard greens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the signs of toxicity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/maven.pet\/all-about-pets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/can_dogs_eat_mustard_signs_toxicity.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2689\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not known how much mustard a dog would need to eat to suffer from toxicity, and time it takes for signs to appear can be variable. So if your dog ingests mustard, the following symptoms may be observed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vomiting<\/li><li>Diarrhea<\/li><li>Lethargy<\/li><li>Reduced appetite<\/li><li>Drooling<\/li><li>Abdominal pain<\/li><li>Airway irritation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do if my dog ate mustard?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/maven.pet\/all-about-pets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/can_dogs_eat_mustard_what_to_do.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2690\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As it is not known how much mustard can cause toxicity in dogs, it is a good idea to contact your veterinarian if your dog has eaten even a small amount. Take note of the type of mustard and how much the dog has eaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it was just a minimal amount of mustard, your veterinarian will most likely advise that you monitor your dog for any of the symptoms listed above.
