Most dogs with atopic dermatitis start showing signs between one and three years of age<\/a>. Symptoms may be seasonal or year-round depending on the trigger. Breeds including Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Labradors and Terriers are among those predisposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. Food allergies:<\/strong> caused by an immune reaction to proteins in food. The most common food allergens in dogs are beef (number one), dairy and chicken. Contrary to popular belief, grains are not a major cause of food allergies in dogs<\/a>. Symptoms typically include non-seasonal pruritus and may also involve digestive upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. Flea\/insect allergies:<\/strong> flea saliva is the most common insect allergen in dogs, causing flea allergy dermatitis (FAD)<\/a>. A single flea bite can trigger intense itching in a sensitized dog, particularly around the base of the tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4. Contact allergies:<\/strong> the least common type, caused by direct contact with allergens such as pesticides, certain fabrics or cleaning products. Symptoms typically appear at contact points like paws and belly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Food allergy symptoms in dogs can closely resemble environmental allergy symptoms, which is one of the reasons diagnosis is challenging. Signs that may indicate food allergies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Environmental allergies, also called atopic dermatitis or atopy, are triggered by allergens that are inhaled or penetrate through the skin. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed immune disorders, affecting approximately 10-15% of the canine population<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Common triggers include dust mites, tree and grass pollens, mold, mildew and weeds. Dogs living indoors are particularly vulnerable to dust mite-related atopy due to higher concentrations of mites in bedrooms and kitchens. Environmental allergies are typically harder to eliminate than food allergies, as avoiding the triggers is often impractical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Symptoms tend to flare seasonally with certain allergens (e.g., pollen) but can become year-round as the dog becomes sensitized to more triggers over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If your dog keeps itching and biting himself, allergies are one of the most likely explanations, but not the only one. Itching can also be caused by flea infestations, skin mites, fungal infections or autoimmune skin diseases. This is why a veterinary evaluation is essential before assuming allergies are the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within the allergy category, persistent itching and self-directed biting are most commonly associated with atopic dermatitis and flea allergy. The itch-scratch cycle can be difficult to break: scratching causes skin damage, which creates entry points for secondary infections, which cause more itching. Allergic reactions that cause itchy skin lesions may result in open wounds due to the dog’s constant scratching<\/a>, making early intervention important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The diagnostic approach depends on the suspected allergy type. Your veterinarian will review your dog’s history and may perform skin scrapes, fungal cultures, blood tests or fecal analysis to rule out non-allergy causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For food allergies<\/strong>, the elimination-provocation test remains the gold standard, involving a strict novel protein or hydrolyzed diet for a minimum of 8 weeks<\/a>. No treats, flavored medications or table scraps are allowed during the trial. Importantly, the only way to confirm a food allergy diagnosis is to later challenge the dog with the original diet and observe for flare-ups<\/a>.
