Can Dogs Eat Sushi?

Sushi isn’t for everyone, we know that. But if you’re a sushi fan, it has probably crossed your mind if it would be safe for your furry best friend to try a little bit… Right? So, can dogs eat sushi?

Can dogs eat sushi?

Well, the answer isn’t so simple. Dogs can eat sushi depending on the ingredients present. In order to clarify the answer, we need to break sushi down into its separate ingredients and inspect each of them individually.

The ingredients that, in general, are ok for your pup to try and eat once in a while are:

  • Brown and white rice
  • Seaweed
  • Eggs
  • Salmon
  • Avocado
  • Cucumber
  • Mango
  • Strawberry
  • Carrot

The ingredients that are not safe and you should not offer your dog are:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Soy sauce
  • Wasabi
  • Vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Tempura
  • Spices
  • Whipped cream

What are the health benefits of sushi?

Depending on the ingredients, sushi can have different health benefits. Two of the most important ones are in:

–   Fish

Excellent source of protein and omega 3-fatty acids which are good for cardiac health, skin, immune system, eyes and so on.

–   Seaweed

Seaweed has a lot of minerals and vitamins that are required to maintain your dog’s optimal health.

What should I be aware of when offering sushi to my dog?

Feeding your dog sushi is safe if you avoid the ingredients that are not recommended. However, there are still some considerations to have in mind.

The greatest risk of feeding sushi to dogs comes from the raw fish, which can contain bacteria and parasites. Consider it as if you’re planning to eat the raw fish yourself: if it’s safe for human consumption, you can consider it safe for your pup too. Sushi-grade raw fish is prepared in such a way that will generally make it safe.

Never feed your pup fish that is old, like leftover sushi or fish that’s been around for a while.

To feed sushi to your dog, you could give them a fresh whole piece or cut it up into tiny pieces. Just don’t make it a regular habit – once in a while is enough!

  1. Why can’t dogs have whipped cream? And btw I’ve always found that avocado is on the do not eat lists that I’ve seen anyway. It’d be awesome if I was wrong bcuz my Danes like it. Or did when they tried it before I’d read that on a few different lists. Btw when is Maven coming already? Feels like I’ve been waiting forever!

    1. Hi Jennifer! While whipped cream isn’t toxic to dogs, it’s also not beneficial due to its high concentration of sugar and fat – so it’s not recommended. Regarding avocado, dogs can eat it as long as we’re talking about small amounts. Avocados contain persin, which is toxic to certain animals but is not proven to be toxic to dogs or cats (in fact, there are studies dedicated to proving otherwise – that it is not toxic to dogs and cats). Regardless, moderation is essential!

Regarding Maven’s launch, we’re currently in the beta testing stage – the product is being tested extensively and we’re receiving daily feedback on its performance. We want Maven to be the best product it can be, and we will only make it available when it meets our expectations. For this reason, we cannot yet provide a concrete release date, but we’ll have news soon! Stay tuned 🙂 Best regards!
