Salami is a type of processed meat, often made of pork or various meats with the addition of spices, salt, and sometimes sugar. As we all know, it is not the healthiest food for humans… Although it is tasty, for sure. But, can we share it with our feline friends? Can cats eat salami?
Can cats eat salami?
The answer to this question can be a bit tricky. We do not recommend giving salami to your cat, but salami is not toxic for cats. However, with its high-fat content, the spices and the salt, salami definitely is not the best choice for your cat.
What are the signs of toxicity?
Despite not being toxic per se, using salami as a cat treat may end in a vet visit, because it can upset their stomach anyway. Also, it can contain toxic ingredients like garlic, onion or other spices. You should be aware of these symptoms:
- Lack of appetite
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Besides, if given regularly it can cause other health issues like obesity, hypertension or kidney disease.
What to do if my cat eats salami?
As previously mentioned, the majority of commercial salami available is not going to be beneficial for cats, so we do not recommend offering it to your feline. However, if your cat ingested a small piece of salami, most likely nothing will happen. On the other hand, if your cat ingested a big amount of salami or exhibits any of the described symptoms, you need to take them to the vet.
The only way you should share a bit of salami with your furry friend is if you find some that is very low in sodium and free of other additional spices or ingredients. This way, it could be okay to give a little piece to your cat.
