Bread makes up a large part of the human diet and we all love it. As a nation of dog lovers, we also would love to share the good stuff with our pups… Which brings the question: can dogs eat bread?
Can dogs eat bread?
Yes, plain bread with no added ingredients is safe for dogs to eat. However, there is no nutritional value in it, so giving your dog bread regularly is not recommended.
What are the health benefits of bread?
Bread is full of carbohydrates, which can give your dog a boost of energy – but dogs do not need carbohydrates to have energy.
The fiber can also be good in cases of diarrhea, but it’s not the most recommendable food in these cases anyway.
The very little (or close to zero) nutritional benefits make bread a good option only as an occasional treat.
What should I be aware of when offering bread to my dog?
Always consider bread an occasional treat, and remember that all treats combined should make up no more than 10 percent of your dog’s daily caloric intake.
Some dogs might experience stomach problems when eating too many carbohydrates. Also, dogs can easily become overweight if they eat bread too frequently… Which, as you know, can lead to various other health issues.
If you want to share a slice of bread with your pup once in a while, you can – you just need to be sure that there are no toxic ingredients in it:
Type of breads that should not be offered:
Bread with nuts, chocolate chips, raisins, onions and garlic, xylitol or other artificial sweeteners and raw bread dough.
Type of breads that can be offered in moderation:
White bread, pumpkin bread, breadcrumbs and cornbread. All of them should be without spices or other toxic ingredients.
There may be some dogs who have allergies or gluten intolerances, so it’s important to talk with your vet first.
