Grapefruits are a refreshing citrus fruit that many of us enjoy eating. But is it a good idea to feed one to your dog? Can dogs eat grapefruit, or is it toxic?
Can dogs eat grapefruit?
Most dogs can eat a very small amount of grapefruit flesh without any problems, but it is not advisable to feed grapefruit to dogs.
Bitter, sour citrus fruits, such as grapefruits and lemons, contain a compound called psoralen which is toxic to dogs. This is at its most concentrated in the rind, seeds, and pith of the grapefruit, so these parts should never be fed to dogs.
Grapefruit is also high in citric acid, which gives it the characteristic sharp, tangy flavor. If a dog consumes an excessive amount of citric acid, it can cause central nervous depression and other neurological side effects.
Luckily, dogs hate the taste of citric acid, so you will find that they are highly unlikely to consume grapefruit in the first place!
What are the signs of toxicity?
Psoralen poisoning in dogs that have eaten grapefruit leads to digestive problems, causing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.
Long-term effects include reduced kidney function, weight loss, and increased sensitivity to light. You may notice reddening or irritation of the skin, caused by dermatitis.
Toxic levels of citric acid will affect the nervous system of the dog, causing it to become imbalanced and uncoordinated. In severe cases, the dog may also suffer from seizures.
What to do if my dog ate grapefruit?
A small amount of grapefruit flesh is unlikely to harm your dog. Regardless, you should monitor your canine friend closely for any adverse reactions. If your dog appears at all unwell or displays any unusual behavior you should contact your veterinary clinic immediately.
In the unusual event that your dog eats a large amount of grapefruit, particularly the rind, then it is vital to seek medical help straight away.
