Why Do Dogs Dig Holes?

Does your dog love to dig up your yard or garden? This behavior can be fun to watch, but also very destructive! So, why do dogs dig holes?

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about dogs digging holes, including whether it is a good idea to let your dog dig holes, and how to stop this behavior if necessary!

Why Do Dogs Dig Holes?

There is no funnier sight than your precious pooch kicking dirt out of a deep hole, apparently just for the fun of it! However, if your dog starts to obsessively dig up areas of your garden or yard, you might start to wonder why.

Dogs may dig holes for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Instinctive behavior

Several breeds of dogs, such as terriers, were originally bred to hunt small animals that live underground. Although we rarely use dogs for hunting anymore, your pet pooch may still have these instincts that have been passed down through generations of these breeds. Digging holes to bury objects like toys or bones is another form of instinctive behavior.

  1. Boredom, anxiety, or stress

Dogs that are left alone for long periods of time or do not receive enough exercise or mental stimulation may dig holes out of boredom. Dogs may also dig holes as a way to relieve anxiety or stress or to escape from loud noises like thunder or fireworks.

  1. Seeking coolness or warmth

A hole in the dirt makes a cool place to lie down on a hot day, or a warm den-like space to curl up in on a cold day. In snowy climates, sled dogs sleep in cozy holes in the snow!

Should I Let My Dog Dig Holes?

Whether or not to let your dog dig holes is ultimately up to you as the owner, but there are some things to consider when making this decision.

On one hand, allowing your dog to dig holes can provide them with an outlet for their natural instincts and can be a fun activity for them. However, digging holes can also cause damage to your yard or garden, and can be a safety hazard if your dog digs near a fence or under a building foundation, leading to the risk of your dog escaping. There is also the problem that digging can make your precious pooch very dirty indeed!

If you do decide to let your dog dig holes, it’s important to set boundaries and make sure they only dig in designated areas. You can create a digging pit or sandbox for your dog, and encourage them to dig there by burying toys or treats in the area. You should also supervise your dog while they are digging to make sure they don’t dig too deep or cause damage.

If you don’t want your dog to dig holes, you can discourage the behavior by redirecting their attention to other activities, providing plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, and training them to stop digging on command. You can also try using deterrents such as rocks to prevent your dog from digging in certain areas.

How To Get Your Dog To Stop Digging Holes

While digging is a fun play activity, some dogs will get obsessed about digging holes and you may decide it is time to put a stop to this activity. However, breaking the habit can be difficult, especially if you cannot constantly supervise your dog!

To discourage your dog from digging holes, provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation: A tired and mentally stimulated dog is less likely to engage in destructive behaviors like digging. If your dog is digging due to stress or anxiety, it is important to address these issues rather than punish the digging behavior.

If possible, supervise your dog whenever it is outside – if you catch your dog digging, redirect their attention to another activity or toy. Alternatively, teach your dog a command such as ‘sit’ to use whenever they start digging and reward their behavior when they obey.

It’s important to be patient and consistent when trying to stop your dog from digging holes. With time and effort, you can teach your dog to engage in more appropriate behaviors and enjoy a happy, healthy relationship with them.
